Andi's Angle Archives: September 2000

Two weeks ago, as my dad and I were replacing a light fixture on my front porch, I decided to quickly refill the hummingbird feeder that had been accidentally knocked off and spilled the evening before.   In less than five minutes I had the feeder back in its proper place, and in less than two, a hummingbird was perched on the side having breakfast.   I thought how it must have been hovering nearby, just waiting for me to show up so it could eat.  Definitely one eager creature!
Wouldn’t it be nice if all Christians approached fellowship like the hummingbird approached the feeder?  He waited eagerly for his opportunity and then in the blink of an eye, he was there.   He wasn’t bashful about going near the feeder.  He knew that he needed what was there, and he went after it.  It didn’t matter that strangers were nearby.
Several places in the Corinthian letter Paul talks about the Christians “coming together”.     Because of the persecution that the early Christians faced, they needed this time together, for encouragement and edification.   Christians today may not be facing a death sentence as Simba’s lunch, but they are facing situations where a talk with  fellow Christians for advice or support is needed.  Being around other Christians can lift someone’s spirits who has had a tough day at work.
In the English Version for the Deaf, Hebrews 10:24-25 is translated as “ We should think about each other and see how we can help each other to show love and do good things. We should not quit meeting together.  That is what some people are doing.  But we should meet together and strengthen each other.  You should do this more and more as you see the Day is coming.”   This seems to sum up the importance of assembling together.   God wants us to be together for Him, but also for each other.  So, if you think that you don’t matter in the church, think again.  Someone needs you---your brothers and sisters in Christ.
